Songs for Children

Songs for Children

Written By: Admin - Apr• 11•12

For many years, Gary Storm has charmed children and adults with performances and cassette recordings of his songs. Now his music is available to the world. These songs evoke sweet memories for the young adults who listened to these songs as children. Now they share Gary’s music with their own children!

This collection of songs includes a version of Ella Jenkins’ “Mary Mack,” a nostalgic adaptation of “Bicycle Built for Two” that even includes the pops and clicks of a vinyl record, and a magical mashup of traditional songs like “Bah Bah Black Sheep” and “Twinkle.” But most of the songs on the album are by Gary, created for and co-written by Gary’s own children. Gary sings about subjects that matter to kids and their parents: princesses, princes, legends, seasons, witches, wishes, magic, monsters, jokes, Peter Pan, lollipops, babies, teddy bears, poop, pee, mommies, daddies, sleep, nature, and peace.

Gary’s music inspires children to sing and dance. Kids love to laugh along to “The Teddy Bear song,” and they always beg to hear it again. They naturally leap into dance to the “Winter Solstice Song.” They love to quietly dream to “Heartbeat,” a mother’s lullaby. This magical music touches the hearts of all who listen.

Adults find pleasure in the mellow sophistication of the songs, the celebration of innocence, and the fact that some of the tunes, like the “Diaper Changing Song” and the “Teething Song,” are written from a parent’s perspective. Gary follows the edgy spirit of legendary performers like Burl Ives, Roger Whittaker, Raffi, and Fred Penner. The whole recording consists entirely of Gary’s melodious voice and his acoustic guitar. His singing and strumming are warm, ageless, and reassuring to all.

Gary holds a J.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he previously earned a Ph.D. in English. In addition to his children’s recordings, he has played viola and guitar and written songs for numerous bands. Most recently he is a member of the rock band Wes Studi’s Firecat of Discord. Gary’s previous and current lives include surviving as an all-night disc jockey, a substitute teacher, a high school English teacher, a taxi driver, an encyclopedia salesman, a telemarketer, a Tribal Law professor, a musician, an undergraduate English professor, a record store clerk, an independent scholar, an insurance defense attorney, a judicial clerk, a landlord, a stock investor, a clerk at Borders, a manufacturer of women’s apparel, and a water-law attorney. You can read about his exploits on the radio at www.oilofdog.com. Gary’s wife, Linda Storm, is an artist and a Montessori teacher. You can see her art at www.lindastormart.com and at Last Gallery on the Right on Canyon Road in Santa Fe. Gary and Linda were married live on the radio on WUWU-FM in Buffalo in 1983. They have four beautiful accomplished children, April, Nathan, Cadance, and Juniper.
